About TORKS

The Oklahoma Radio Kontrol Society (TORKS) was established in 1963. We’re an Academy of Model Aeronautics chartered club (AMA charter 1648) and an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA global ID df40a260-9d2a-4881-bf54-be78dc3371fb). We’re a family-friendly club, with cookouts and picnics in summer.

History

TORKS has flown at its current home, the Tom Jones R/C Flying Field, since 1979.

Thanks go to Dr. Charles Monnet, Larry Barnes, Robert Billington, Joe DiMonico and Bruce Firetag, who began the paperwork for the original lease from the Oklahoma City Water Trust, and to Mr. Earl Hern for a long relationship with the club. Ken Kehlet visited the Water Trust monthly, sometimes weekly, to work out what TORKS could and couldn’t do under the lease, and kept the support of Mr. Wendel Weisenhut, Director of Oklahoma’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

Over the decades since, TORKS Officers and city officials have kept developers off the Field, and Members have kept it beautiful.

The Field

The Field is in northwest Oklahoma City on the south shore of Lake Hefner, midway between Meridian Avenue and Portland Avenue, a quarter mile east of the fire station, off S. Lake Hefner Dr.
